The city of Arvada is located in Jefferson and Adams County, and is suburb northwest of Denver. Olde Town Arvada is located just 7 miles northwest of the State Capitol. Arvada is the 8th most populous city in the state. Arvada enjoys a convenient location to Denver International Airport and the downtown business district, while its residents can enjoy stunning mountain views with easy access to mountain recreation sites, as well as local parks and trails. Quiet neighborhoods and a diverse business mix make it one of the most desired locations for newcomers and residents alike. Arvada is known as a progressive city and yet manages to hang onto its historical roots.
In 1850 Lewis Ralston was a member of a wagon train headed for the California Gold Rush, when they stopped and he dipped his gold pan in an unnamed mountain stream and found what is believed to be Colorado’s first gold discovery – it was worth almost $5. The stream was later named after Mr. Ralston. Other settlers discovered that growing crops in the area between Ralston Creek & Clear Creek was a better return for their time than panning for gold. The small farming community that sprang up grew many crops, including wheat, corn, oats, plums, celery, cherries, berries, melons and vegetables. At one time Arvada was known as the Celery Capitol of the World!
Arvada was born on December 1, 1870, six years before Colorado achieved statehood. The town was named by Mary Wadsworth in honor of her brother, Hiram Arvada Haskin; Mary’s husband, Benjamin F. Wadsworth and Louis A. Reno filed the original town plat. It was August of 1904 before the Town of Arvada was officially incorporated. Arvada’s economy surged in 1906 when a brickyard employing 40 men was opened on Carr Hill just north of the railroad tracks.
